HoW exciting! 2018

Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Berlin, Germany, July 31 - August 9, 2018

Welcome to HoW exciting! 2018

HoW exciting! 2018 consists of two closely related events, a hands-on tutorial and an international workshop about excitations in solids.

Hands-on tutorial on excitations in solids (July 31 - August 5, 2018)

This tutorial offers young scientists the opportunity to practice with hands-on exercises with the software package exciting. These exercises will guide participants through the topics addressed in the subsequent workshop: From the basics of DFT to advanced topics, such as time-dependent DFT and many-body perturbation theory, as well as to their applications to real materials.

Workshop on excitations in solids (August 6-9, 2018)

Excitations in solids are among the most exciting phenomena in condensed-matter physics. In this context, the electronic-structure approach within density-functional theory (DFT) is the first level in a hierarchical set of models which are needed to quantitatively describe and understand these phenomena in real materials. The relationship of the different computational techniques and domains of applicability is still a challenging task. At the same time, advances in theoretical and computational methods go hand in hand with the progresses in experimental techniques.

The main goals of this workshop are:

  1. Surveying the state-of-the-art of theoretical and computational approaches to describe different kinds of excitations (optical, magnetic, vibrational, etc.) in solid-state materials;
  2. Discussing future perspectives of these methodologies and their applications in different research fields;
  3. Establishing collaborations and connections between theoretical and experimental groups, who are investigating excitations in materials from different perspectives.

The workshop is organized in topical sessions, including invited and contributed talks. Basic concepts will be discussed, and applications to real functional materials will be presented, with the main focus on theory but also from an experimental perspective. The major topics will comprise first-principles methodology for excitation processes in solids, including electronic excitations, electron-phonon coupling, core-excitations, and non-equilibrium processes.
